Kyiv will require allied nations to provide security assurances “closely resembling NATO membership,” according to statements made by Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on August 24, as Deutsche Welle reports.
“We cannot demand Ukraine consider territorial concessions without Kyiv obtaining robust security assurances from as many nations as possible, ensuring the safety of its remaining territory,” the German minister declared.
He contends that if allies insist precisely on these security assurances, it could also persuade Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Wadephul asserted this poses “no threat” to Russia itself and could signify “peace once more” in Europe.
The head of Germany’s MFA noted he anticipates numerous nations ready to grant Ukraine security guarantees post-conflict. He suggested expanding the group of such states beyond Europe. Wadephul stated about 30 countries have currently expressed readiness to support Ukraine.
The minister stressed that violating these security guarantees would be treated as a renewed assault on Ukraine. Concurrently, he warned that any peace treaty between Ukraine and Russia must not be detrimental to Kyiv.
“Putin must cease his aggressive war against Ukraine and engage in negotiation. Otherwise, he should anticipate our determined opposition alongside Ukraine,” Wadephul remarked.
