EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas asserts that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin secured his objectives from the meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska, reducing his current motivation for further dialogue. She shared this perspective during an interview with BBC.

Kallas noted that Putin’s primary goals in Alaska were to disrupt international isolation and postpone sanctions.

“He gained a photo opportunity with the U.S. president and far more — a welcoming reception in America… He also aimed to prevent sanctions, which he achieved,” the EU diplomat explained.

These accomplishments have diminished the Russian leader’s appetite for ongoing negotiations.

“I believe his interest has waned since he obtained what he sought from that summit,” stated Kallas.

She urged the EU and U.S. to impose additional sanctions and tariffs against Russia, emphasizing that Putin might only return to talks under heightened pressure.

“We have various tools at our disposal. The U.S. can leverage sanctions or tariffs. On the European side, we’re advancing the 19th sanctions package,” she elaborated.

Kallas stressed that the Kremlin leader has yet to make concessions to end the war in Ukraine.

“It’s evident that every pledge Putin has made remains unfulfilled, and we must respond accordingly. He merely mocks efforts, escalating killings instead of halting them,” the diplomat emphasized.

  • On August 21, Zelenskyy highlighted that Russia’s intensified attacks on Ukrainian cities, intensified frontline assaults, and instances of NATO airspace violations signal the Kremlin’s refusal to end the Russo-Ukrainian war.
